Defying Boundaries
Celestial Visions is a recital program, developed by pianist Frank Huang, that consists of music evoking dream and fantasy elements. Experience how music can have the power to challenge and expand our sense of reality. Celestial Visions aims to defy musical boundaries and invites you to transcend your imagination.
The program will feature two rarely-performed works in recital: George Crumb’s, A Little Midnight Music, and Liszt’s magnificent piano arrangement of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. In A Little Midnight Music, Crumb conjures the spirit of Thelonious Monk through various extended piano techniques and quotations of his famous jazz standard, ‘Round Midnight. In Berlioz’s work, it tells a story of how of an artist (presumably himself) with a lively imagination who has poisoned himself with opium in the depths of despair because of hopeless, unreciprocated love.
